Topics in Cancer Genomics Research (TICGR) Presentation Guidelines

TICGR Sessions take place via Zoom web conferencing Fridays, 12:00-1:00pm PT.

Presentation length should be 30-45 minutes long with 10-15 minutes of Q&A time afterwards.

You can present on:
  • A GCRA related topic focused on your clinical or research experience/expertise 
    • Recommended for CCGCOP members who lead or collaborate in GCRA related research
  • GCRA Journal article(s) critique or topical literature review

Guidelines for Journal Article(s) Critique or Topical Literature Review

Article Selection:

  • The topic must be related to cancer genetics/genomics
  • We suggest that you consider presenting 1-2 articles on a related topic.
  • The article needs to be current, published within the last 5 years, and from a peer-reviewed journal for genetics, cancer, or another relevant field.
    • Journal examples: Genetics in Medicine, American Journal of Human Genetics, Journal of Genetic Counseling, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Genetic Testing and Molecular Biomarkers, Nature Genetics, Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA), Lancet, and the New England Journal of Medicine

Presentation Structure:

  • Article title, journal, and date of publication
  • Summary of background and study purpose
  • Methods
    • Design type
    • Sample information
  1. Sample size
  2. Inclusion and exclusion criteria
    • Statistical design
    • Data analysis
  • Results:
    • Summary
    • Description of all figures/tables
  • Discussion
    • Summary of the major study conclusions
    • Interpretation and significance of findings
    • Study strengths and limitations
    • Relevance to the scope of practice of cancer genetics professionals
  • Conclusion
  • Case examples when/where appropriate
  • Key references as appropriate on the bottom of each slide (last name of first author, year of publication and journal name).
  • Bibliography with full references at the end of the presentation

Web Conferencing Reminders:

1. Make sure you can share your screen and advance your slides. Save your presentation on desktop, so that it’s easy to access for the presentation.
2. Camera Angle: Check that you have good lighting and your camera angle frames your head and shoulders well. Make sure that you have a non-distracting background.
3. HIPAA Reminder: Never have patient information on your desktop, Close your email to assure confidential information is not displayed.
4. Silence your phone during presentation and assure that people will not disrupt you if possible.
5. Verify that the place you will be sitting the day of the presentation has a solid internet connection.
